At R. Hanauer, we consider it a great privilege to provide gentlemen with fine accessories like bow ties and cummerbunds he will wear to some of the most memorable and important events of his life – and proud that our unwavering dedication to quality assures that they last a lifetime.
Randy and Randall Hanauer personally select every fabric in every collection we present, and our team of sewing associates cut and sew every bow tie, cummerbund, and other silk accessories by hand in our South Carolina workshop.
It’s a time-consuming process we have practiced since our founding in 1985 and – as decades of clients can attest – it is absolutely worth the effort.
1. Nickel Clasp
A nickel clasp is both a practical and stylish choice. It enhances the overall quality and longevity of a cummerbund and ensures it stays firmly in place throughout formal events, preventing slipping or shifting.
Nickel is an excellent choice for the hardware as it resists wear and tear, meaning the clasp will maintain its functionality and polished appearance over time.
2. Satin Acetate Outer Lining
Satin acetate is a strong, stain-resistant and wrinkle-resistant material that maintains its structure, but it’s not scratchy or dull – it’s ideal for the lining of a cummerbund.
The soft texture feels comfortable against the fabric of a tuxedo or shirt, preventing irritation, and its smooth, glossy finish contributes to the formal and polished look of the cummerbund. Satin acetate also holds dyes well, safeguarding the rich, vibrant colors and patterns of the fabric.
3. Nickel Sliders on Each Side
High-quality metal sliders allow for precise size adjustment and hold the adjustable straps firmly in place, preventing the cummerbund from loosening during wear. With nickel being resistant to bending or breaking, the sliders will remain functional through repeated use.
4. Three-Hand Pleats
Evenly spaced three-hand pleats are a hallmark of classic cummerbund design and reflect meticulous handwork. This design element has endured for generations, signifying the cummerbund’s role as a sartorial staple.
They create visual harmony – drawing the eye horizontally and complementing the tuxedo’s sleek vertical lines – and add depth, texture, and elegance. The pleats are worn facing upward in keeping with tradition, as well as in acknowledgement of the cummerbund’s nickname: the crumb catcher!
The cummerbunds of R. Hanauer all measure five inches. This width aligns with classic formalwear standards, emphasizes the craftsmanship of the pleats, and effectively covers the trouser waistband to create a balanced and flattering silhouette without overwhelming the wearer’s frame. The width of the fabric also promises a secure and comfortable fit, staying in place during movement without bunching or slipping.
R. Hanauer boasts a stunning collection of silk, velvet, satin, cotton, and linen cummerbund sets. Each offers meticulous balance and refined simplicity – exactly the desired look for such formal and black-tie affairs as weddings, galas, evening performances, and award ceremonies.
